Hypnosis, including self-hypnosis, is generally considered a safe practice. However, if you have a pre-existing psychological conditions, such as schizophrenia or severe dissociative disorders, it may be wise to consult a medical professional or your GP if you have concerns.

Can people have bad experiences of hypnosis?

While rare, some individuals may experience temporary discomfort, such as emotional release (called an ‘abreaction’) or heightened awareness of suppressed thoughts. This is a normal part of self-discovery and can be managed with proper guidance and practice.
There is no evidence that hypnosis is the primary and only cause when such situations occur. Spontaneous self-awareness or abreactions are a natural part of the human experience, and can present themselves as part of any therapeutic journey.
