Hypnotherapy Resources for Midwives

Supporting Midwives Through Compassionate Self-Care

Midwives work at the centre of some of the most significant moments in people’s lives. It can be an extraordinarily rewarding profession, but it also brings a distinctive combination of emotional, physical and psychological demands.

High patient-numbers, staffing shortages and long shifts may sit alongside responsibility for the safety of mother and baby, exposure to traumatic births and loss, organisational pressures, disrupted sleep and the challenge of maintaining a life outside work.

Over time, these pressures can affect emotional wellbeing, sleep, concentration, confidence and the ability to recover properly between shifts.

These five clinical hypnosis recordings have been created specifically for midwives. They are designed to provide a practical form of psychological support: helping you reduce mental and emotional overload, strengthen resilience, maintain healthy professional boundaries and recover more effectively from demanding work.

They can be used individually, or in whatever sequence is most helpful to you.

The Five Major Stressors for Midwives

These are:

  • Workload and Staffing Shortages
High patient-numbers, staff shortages, long shifts and excessive workload
  • Emotional Burden
Exposure to traumatic births, maternal or neonatal death, and supporting distressed families
  • Fear of Adverse Outcomes and Litigation
Responsibility for the safety of mother and baby, with concerns about complaints, investigations and legal action
  • Organisational Pressures
Administrative demands, lack of support, poor communication and limited professional autonomy
  • Work–Life Imbalance
Shift work, night duties, fatigue, sleep disruption and difficulty balancing work with personal and family life

What These Recordings Are For

The hypnosis recordings in this section have been created specifically for healthcare professionals experiencing sustained occupational stress, work–life imbalance, and identity strain. They are designed to support nervous system regulation, emotional recovery, psychological flexibility, and a clearer separation between professional role and personal identity in the context of demanding clinical roles.

Each recording works by guiding attention away from constant vigilance and responsibility, allowing the nervous system to shift out of prolonged stress activation. Over time, this supports improved sleep, reduced emotional exhaustion, clearer thinking, greater resilience, and an increased capacity for rest and regulation.

The primary aim of these audios is to reduce overload, restore internal boundaries, and support the capacity to remain present and effective at work without personal depletion.

Used appropriately, these recordings support the individual clinician within the reality of modern medical practice, recognising that sustained performance depends on regulation, rest, and boundaries rather than endurance alone.

How to Use the Recordings

Choose a time when you will not be disturbed and when you do not need to remain alert or responsible for somebody else.

You can listen sitting or lying down, whichever feels most comfortable. Headphones may be used but are not essential.

There is nothing you need to achieve while listening. You do not have to concentrate on every word. Some people remain aware of the entire recording; others find their attention drifting in and out. Either response is perfectly acceptable.

The recordings may be used individually according to the pressures you are experiencing at the time, and there is no requirement to listen to them in a particular order. They may also be used repeatedly. Regular listening can become part of the transition away from work and towards rest and recovery, particularly during periods of increased professional or emotional demand.

Important Guidance

Do not listen while driving, operating machinery or undertaking any activity requiring your full attention.

These recordings are intended as supportive self-help resources. They do not replace medical, psychological or psychiatric care, occupational health services, clinical supervision or other professional support where these are required.

Finally, If you are experiencing significant psychological distress, depression, burnout or difficulties that are affecting your ability to function safely at work or at home, appropriate professional support should be sought.

Success depends on consistency, the quality of suggestions used, and the individual's level of engagement.

Can people have bad experiences of hypnosis?

While rare, some individuals may experience temporary discomfort, such as emotional release (called an ‘abreaction’) or heightened awareness of suppressed thoughts. This is a normal part of self-discovery and can be managed with proper guidance and practice.
There is no evidence that hypnosis is the primary and only cause when such situations occur. Spontaneous self-awareness or abreactions are a natural part of the human experience, and can present themselves as part of any therapeutic journey.
